Shunt Tied to Survival in Ascites

Share

A retrospective study led by Krisztina Fekete and Péter Kupcsulik at Semmelweis University assessed the efficacy of peritoneovenous shunt placement in 348 patients with refractory ascites due to alcoholic liver cirrhosis. The findings revealed a 63% survival rate at one year and 23% at five years, with improved outcomes for patients with less advanced liver disease. Operative mortality was reported at 10%, and the study highlighted the significant role of MELD scores in predicting survival. Despite limitations, the researchers suggest that PVS may be a viable treatment option when other interventions are unsuitable.
