Research published in the International Journal of Oral Science reveals that salivary microbiota associated with periodontitis may negatively affect bone metabolism, particularly in osteoporosis. By analyzing samples from 21 patients with periodontitis and 17 healthy donors via 16S ribosomal RNA sequencing, the study uncovered higher microbial diversity and pathogen levels in the periodontitis group. The study utilized a mouse model where salivary microbiota from both groups were introduced, demonstrating lower bone density in mice fed periodontitis-associated microbiota. The findings highlight the interconnectedness of oral health and systemic conditions, hinting at new therapeutic targets in gut microbial metabolism.
