Glaucoma Surgery During Pregnancy

Share

Surgical decisions in pregnant women with glaucoma require careful risk assessment and multidisciplinary coordination. When medication and laser therapy fail to manage intraocular pressure (IOP), surgery may become necessary despite the lack of established guidelines, predominantly relying on animal studies and small case series. Dr. Sunita Radhakrishnan emphasized at the AGS meeting that while nonobstetric surgeries are rare in pregnancy, risks to the fetus must be considered. Elective surgeries are advisable to postpone, with cautious evaluation and planning before and during pregnancy being vital for optimal outcomes.
