Smell Screening With a Mobile Test

Share

A novel mobile application-based olfactory screening test shows promise for rapid olfactory dysfunction diagnosis. Conducted at a US tertiary medical center, the study enrolled 484 adults, revealing significant differences in test scores based on reported olfactory ability and age. The app demonstrated diagnostic performance with a sensitivity of 74% and specificity of 86%, achieving an area under the curve of 0.87. Lead author Benjamin J. Bernard, MD, emphasized its rapid, reliable, and scalable nature. Limitations include a single-center design and variations in test performance.
