Cannabis & Ocular Inflammatory Disease Links

A retrospective cohort study utilizing the TriNetX Global Collaborative Network has found that cannabis use significantly raises the risk of uveitis and other ocular inflammatory conditions, particularly in posterior segment diseases. This study analyzed over 1.47 million cannabis users against 3.7 million controls, revealing a notable increase in ocular inflammatory diseases like iridocyclitis and retinal vasculitis. Biologically, this may be due to pro-inflammatory signaling and endocannabinoid system dysregulation. With the growing legalization of cannabis, these findings emphasize the need for ophthalmologists to consider cannabis use when evaluating uveitis risk.
