Penicillins Lead in SSI Prevention

Share

A meta-analysis by Motaghi et al. evaluated the effectiveness of various antibiotic regimens in preventing surgical site infections (SSIs) in elective colorectal surgery, involving 18,273 adult patients. The study revealed that broad-spectrum penicillins and cephalosporin-based combinations provided the most effective protection against SSIs, achieving a 74% reduction in risk. The analysis highlighted the need for careful antibiotic selection to reduce SSI rates and mortality, ultimately informing future guidelines for prophylactic antibiotic use in this surgical context.
