Single Swab Approach Assesses Co-Occurring Vaginal Infections

Share

A recent study found that nearly 80% of women diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection (STI) also have bacterial vaginosis (BV). Utilizing a single-swab approach, researchers aimed to improve diagnostic efficiency among patients presenting with vaginal symptoms. The study demonstrated that STI-positive cases also tested positive for BV and vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC). Patients diagnosed with an STI had a higher risk of concurrent BV infections, highlighting the potential benefits of incorporating simultaneous STI and vaginitis testing within clinical practice to support co-infection detection.
