Dental Nitrous Oxide Use Has Measurable Climate Impact, Study Finds

Share

A national quality improvement project in the UK revealed the environmental impact of nitrous oxide used in dental inhalation sedation. Researchers analyzed data from 31 dental services, finding that the mean carbon footprint per sedation appointment reached 28.62 kg of CO2 equivalent, highlighting significant variations in nitrous oxide supply methods. The study emphasized that while inhalation sedation is effective, with a national success rate of 92% among pediatric patients, dental services should monitor nitrous oxide usage and implement strategies to minimize wastage and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
