Global Cardiac Imaging Radiation Varies Widely

Share

A global study published in JAMA reveals that 44% of patients undergoing coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) received radiation doses exceeding the recommended 9 millisievert target. The International Atomic Energy Agency's INCAPS 4 study, conducted in late 2023, analyzed radiation exposure in 19,302 adults across 742 centers in 101 countries. Despite guidelines, wide variability and higher doses were observed in low-income regions. Newer scanner technology was linked to lower radiation exposure, highlighting the need for improved standardization in imaging practices.
