Weighted Vest in Obesity Trial

Share

A secondary analysis of the 12-month INVEST in Bone Health trial revealed that greater upright time in older adults with obesity impacted hip bone mineral density differently based on whether they wore a weighted vest. Community-dwelling adults aged 60 to 85 were assigned to weight loss alone, weight loss with resistance training, or weight loss with a weighted vest, following a structured diet aiming for a 10% weight reduction. While a 30-minute increase in upright time correlated with decreased hip bone density in the weight-loss-only group, the resistance training and vest groups showed no significant change. This research could imply that appropriate mechanical loading plays a crucial role in bone adaptation during weight loss.
