Viral, Fungal Infections May Contribute to Nonresolving ARDS

Share

Cytomegalovirus (CMV), herpes simplex virus (HSV), and Aspergillus species contribute to a cycle of lung injury and immune dysregulation in patients with nonresolving acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). This narrative review by Lenn Maessen et al. highlights the significant morbidity and mortality associated with persistent ARDS, revealing the prevalence of opportunistic infections like invasive pulmonary aspergillosis in ICU patients. The study underscores the diagnostic challenges and knowledge gaps regarding these infections that often affect even previously healthy individuals. With promising yet unclear treatment impacts, further research is essential to improve management in this vulnerable population.
