Mount Sinai researchers have identified that heterozygosity of human leukocyte antigen-II (HLA-II) is linked to a decreased risk of lung cancer, especially among smokers. This study reinforces the hypothesis that the immune system plays a critical protective role against the development of cancer. The findings could have significant implications for understanding the genetic factors influencing lung cancer risk and the interplay between immune response and carcinogenesis.
