Pneumonia Patterns Postpandemic
Pneumococcal and RSV RAD-CAP incidence increased as SARS-CoV-2 incidence declined, disproportionately affecting older adults.
A multicenter study in Germany revealed a striking incidence of radiologically confirmed community-acquired pneumonia (RAD-CAP) of 490 per 100,000 adults from July 2021 to June 2023. The incidence was significantly higher in older adults, particularly those aged 65 and above, who experienced rates 11-fold greater than younger adults. The study tracked over 4,700 patients across three hospitals, identifying primary pathogens like SARS-CoV-2 and Streptococcus pneumoniae as leading causes. This research offers vital insights into pneumonia epidemiology post-COVID-19.
1. Incidence of RAD-CAP: 490 per 100,000 adults in Germany.2. Higher rates in adults aged 65+: 12-fold increase.3. Key pathogens: SARS-CoV-2, Streptococcus pneumoniae.4. Study spanned July 2021 - June 2023.5. Nearly 4,705 patients were screened; 1,577 enrolled.6. Pneumococcal vaccines are crucial as they covered 10% of RAD-CAP cases.7. Limitations include incomplete case capture and detection issues.
