Researchers from the University of Oxford have developed a novel chemical staining approach to map polymer binders in lithium-ion battery anodes at the nanoscale, enhancing the resolution of structural features in commonly used carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) binder systems. By using silver ions and bromine vapor for selective binding and labeling, this method revealed critical distributions and interactions that could significantly optimize manufacturing processes. This innovation offers key insights into electrode performance for current and future battery architectures.
