Hip Replacement vs Exercise for OA Relief

Share

A recent study published in The New England Journal of Medicine compared the efficacy of total hip replacement (THR) versus resistance training (RT) in patients aged 50 years or older with severe hip osteoarthritis (OA) and surgical indications. The results indicated that patients undergoing THR reported significantly greater improvements in hip pain and function compared with those in the RT group. This suggests that patients with severe hip OA may experience greater relief and function with THR compared with RT, with THR potentially offering substantial benefits and being a factor in shared decision-making discussions.
