A Clearer Picture of Microplastics Hiding in Biosolids

Share

Research conducted by a team from Lund University has demonstrated improved methods for detecting microplastics in biosolids, treated sewage sludge that is an eco-friendly alternative to chemical fertilizers but poses risks due to undetected smaller microplastic particles. By using sub-micron optical photothermal infrared (O-PTIR) spectroscopy, the study has innovatively reduced analysis time and enhanced accuracy in identifying microplastics down to 1 µm in size. Proper sample preparation, including Fenton oxidation, was crucial to achieving reliable results.
