Excess Fat Linked to Weaker Bones in Autoimmune Diabetes

Share

A pilot study examined the impact of excess body fat on bone strength in adults with autoimmune diabetes. Researchers found that while bone mineral density (BMD) was often normal or higher in overweight individuals, higher fat mass correlated with lower bone quality, particularly in hip bone strength metrics. The study also identified visceral fat as an independent negative predictor of skeletal stability. These findings suggest that body composition, rather than BMD alone, may be crucial in assessing fracture risk in this patient population, challenging the concept of the ‘obesity paradox’ and highlighting the need for thorough evaluations of bone health.
