DRY EYE DX AND TX

Share

The impact of glaucoma medications on dry eye quality of life (QoL) was assessed in a study by Camp et al. It was found that subjects taking glaucoma drops had significantly more dry eye signs and symptoms than controls, with a proportional increase in the severity of dry eye symptoms associated with the use of multiple glaucoma medications. The frequent use of preservatives, especially benzalkonium chloride (BAK), in these medications led to various side effects affecting ocular health, such as conjunctival inflammation and fibrosis, tear film instability, corneal cytotoxicity, and apoptosis of trabecular meshwork (TM) cells. Understanding the influence of preservatives on ocular agents can aid in making informed prescribing decisions.
