Boys, Men with Eating Disorders: Who’s Trained to Help?

Share

A recent study in the International Journal of Eating Disorders highlights a significant gap in knowledge and training among outpatient psychotherapists in the US and Canada regarding eating disorders and muscle dysmorphia in boys and men. Despite the treatment of such patients in clinical settings, 27% of clinicians reported no knowledge of eating disorders in this demographic, and 44% had no confidence in treating muscle dysmorphia. The research involved a survey of 259 licensed therapists, revealing a need for enhanced training on symptom presentation and risk factors specific to males.
