Researchers in Japan have enhanced tip-enhanced sum frequency generation (TE-SFG) spectroscopy, targeting weak molecular vibrations at surfaces. By integrating vibrational spectroscopy with a scanning tunneling microscope, they mitigated interference from metallic substrates using a temporally asymmetric near-infrared pulse. This innovation allowed for better differentiation between resonant and non-resonant signals, significantly improving the detection of subtle vibrational features. The technique also offered insights into molecular orientations, paving the way for tracking ultrafast molecular dynamics.
