BMI Patterns in ILD Outcomes Examined

Share

A systematic review of 25 articles and 29 studies involving 23,741 patients has revealed that a higher body mass index (BMI) correlates with reduced mortality and slower decline in lung function among individuals with interstitial lung disease (ILD). The analysis covered mortality rates, hospitalization, and lung function specifics from multiple databases through May 2024. It found that obese patients exhibited lower mortality rates and a slower decline in forced vital capacity, though limitations in study design and generalizability were noted. Such findings suggest BMI may reflect overall health rather than serve as a therapeutic target.
