A novel optical brain-monitoring method, refined by researchers, significantly enhances the quality of noninvasive cerebral blood flow measurements, achieving a 20-fold improvement. This advancement, through interferometric diffusing wave spectroscopy (iDWS), leverages coherent amplification of weaker optical signals, optimizing parameters like detector performance and noise filtering. By utilizing an affordable CMOS sensor, the method promises cost-effective bedside deployment. Initial testing in a neuro ICU shows its potential for real-time monitoring in stroke and traumatic brain injury cases.
