Female patients with Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) are at significantly higher risk for gynecologic and obstetric disorders compared to women without the condition, as shown in a retrospective study involving over 50,000 women. Urogynecologic issues were particularly prominent, with EDS patients having up to 10 times the likelihood of conditions such as fecal incontinence and endometriosis. The study also highlighted disparities in care among different racial groups, suggesting a need for increased awareness and specialized care for EDS patients in obstetrics and gynecology.
1. EDS patients face higher risks for gynecologic & obstetric disorders. 2. Increased odds compared to non-EDS women for fecal incontinence (10x), endometriosis (7x). 3. Racial disparities in incidence and care noted. 4. Higher rates of postpartum hemorrhage & preterm labor in EDS patients. 5. Study utilized a large database for comprehensive analysis. 6. Need for specialists in obstetrics and gynecology for EDS patients emphasized.
