Youth Self-Injury Visits Rise Annually

Share

A systematic review and meta-analysis has found that health care encounters for self-injury among patients aged 24 and younger increased by approximately 4% annually from 2000 to 2024, with females showing a sharper increase than males (3.6% vs. 1.2%). Analyzed data from 42 studies covering more than 234 million patients across 12 OECD countries revealed a significant rise in both healthcare visits for self-injury and self-reported cases, suggesting the influence of factors such as social media. The investigation calls for targeted prevention strategies to address this growing concern.
