USPSTF Releases Draft Osteoporosis Screening Guidelines
The USPSTF's draft recommendations reaffirm osteoporosis screening for older women, call for more research on screening men, and address health disparities.
The draft recommendations from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force advocate for osteoporosis screening in older women to prevent fractures, and highlight the need for additional research to determine the potential benefits of screening for men. The draft maintains a 'B' rating for osteoporosis screening in women aged 65 and older, with flexibility in screening methods. It emphasizes the impact of osteoporotic fractures on quality of life and the need for increased awareness. However, the 'I' grade for screening men reflects insufficient evidence to assess the balance of benefits and harms, leading to a call for more research. The recommendations also address various risk factors for fragility fractures and emphasize the limitations of clinical risk assessment tools, especially in minority populations. Public comments on the draft are open until July 8, 2024.
