Moral Distress Associated With Physician Burnout

Share

A recent survey revealed that nearly 40% of physicians experience high moral distress, which correlates with increased burnout, diminished professional fulfillment, and a heightened intent to leave practice or reduce clinical hours. Conducted from October 2023 to March 2024 with over 5,700 physicians, the study utilized the Moral Distress Thermometer, highlighting that physicians have more than four times the odds of experiencing high moral distress compared to other US workers. Key findings indicate a direct link between moral distress, burnout rates, and professional outcomes, with women and certain specialties at greater risk.
