Breast Reconstruction Using Polyurethane-Coated Implants May Reduce the Risk of Capsular Contracture, Additional Surgery

Share

Research presented by Dr. Kerstin Wimmer at the 15th European Breast Cancer Conference reveals that the use of polyurethane-coated breast implants reduces the risk of capsular contracture in women who undergo mastectomy and radiotherapy for breast cancer. An analysis of 1,455 women found significantly fewer complications among those with polyurethane-coated implants, including a lower incidence of painful scar tissue and the necessity for corrective surgeries. This suggests that implant type can influence recovery and long-term outcomes in reconstructive surgery after cancer treatment.
