A Greener Way to Monitor Microplastics

Share

Microplastics, significant pollutants in the environment, carry harmful contaminants like pesticides and PAHs, impacting ecosystems. Achille Cappiello and his team have developed an innovative miniaturized platform combining solid-phase microextraction with liquid electron ionization mass spectrometry (SPME-MOI-LEI-MS) to efficiently monitor pollutant adsorption on microplastics with minimal solvent use. This method addresses the pressing need for sustainable practices in environmental pollution monitoring and could enhance our understanding of the environmental risks posed by microplastic contamination.
