Bipolar Psychosis: Examining Diagnostic Boundaries

Share

A meta-analysis examined psychotic symptoms in bipolar disorder, finding over 50% of patients experienced psychosis, with about 8% also diagnosed with comorbid schizophrenia. The study analyzed data from 285 studies, involving over 337,000 patients. It revealed 63% of individuals with bipolar I and only 17% of those with bipolar II experienced lifetime psychosis. Manic episodes resulted in higher psychosis prevalence (70%) compared to depressive episodes (43%). Factors like age and sex influenced these rates, with significant heterogeneity noted in the findings.
