Recent research indicates that maternal diabetes during pregnancy is linked to a heightened risk of severe retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in premature infants. A study involving over 3,100 infants identified that those exposed to maternal diabetes had nearly three times greater odds of developing advanced ROP stages compared to those unexposed. This correlation was particularly pronounced for pre-gestational diabetes. The findings suggest that integrating maternal diabetes history into ROP screening could improve early detection and management strategies.
