Telehealth Patterns in Medicare Beneficiaries
One in six Medicare beneficiaries used telehealth between 2021 and 2023, with mental health visits leading the way, states new research report.
Between 2021 and 2023, 16.4% of Medicare beneficiaries accessed telehealth services, with nearly half of outpatient visits for mental health delivered virtually. The study analyzed data from 14,950 adults and found that telehealth was especially prevalent for mental health conditions, such as anxiety and depression. Telehealth users generally faced greater medical complexities and health challenges. Following the COVID-19 public health emergency, there is uncertainty regarding the permanence of telehealth services for non-mental health conditions, posing risks for vulnerable populations if coverage retracts.
