Review Supports Fluids, Diet to Prevent Recurrent Kidney Stones

Share

A systematic review in the Annals of Internal Medicine indicates that adults with recurrent calcium oxalate or phosphate stones can benefit from increased fluid intake, a normal to high calcium diet lower in protein and sodium, and certain medications. Though dietary interventions showed varying effectiveness, low-strength evidence supports fluid intake of at least 2 L/day and a normal calcium diet for lowering stone recurrence risks. However, the study reveals significant limitations, including high bias risks in included studies, sparse pediatric data, and a lack of research on imaging strategies.
