A study led by Rachel O'Donoghue from Mater Misericordiae, Dublin, evaluated the quality of preoperative information on fibula free flap surgery from Google AI Overview. The AI provided high-quality information with a mean Global Quality Score of 4.75, but the readability was at a level suitable for a reading age of 16.5 years, exceeding the recommended age of 11 to 13 for health education. Despite being a useful resource, it cannot substitute for direct discussions between patients and their surgical teams. Limitations included variability over time and transparency in AI synthesis.
