When Thyroid and Parathyroid Collide

Share

A recent case report in Sage Open Pathology details the rare occurrence of an intrathyroidal parathyroid adenoma coexisting with papillary thyroid carcinoma in the same thyroid lobe, marked by the carcinoma's direct invasion of the adenoma. This case involved a 63-year-old woman with hypercalcemia and elevated parathyroid hormone levels indicative of primary hyperparathyroidism. The findings emphasize the potential for misdiagnosis of intrathyroidal lesions as benign nodules, highlighting the necessity for detailed histological evaluation and clinicopathologic correlation in such cases.
