Increasingly, small pigmented choroidal lesions are being identified during routine screenings, especially related to diabetic retinopathy and pre-cataract assessments. This poses a challenge for opticians and optometrists in distinguishing benign nevi from potential melanomas. A study led by Gustav Stålhammar evaluated the deep learning algorithm 'MelAInoma,' which aids in triage decisions by significantly enhancing referral accuracy while reducing false positives. The tool's integration could streamline workflows amid growing patient numbers and limited ocular oncologist availability.
