A recent study evaluated the nutritional and promotional profiles of commercial infant and toddler foods in the U.S. Sixty percent of the products did not meet the nutritional standards set by the World Health Organization's Nutrient and Promotion Profile Model (NPPM). None of the products complied with the promotional guidelines, displaying numerous prohibited claims. Compliance with nutritional composition criteria and age-label claims was generally low. Safety and environment claims were the most common, but no product met the 'ingredient list clarity' requirement. The study underscores the urgent need for better regulation and guidance in the U.S. infant and toddler foods market.
