Statins and Survival After 80

Share

Statin therapy in adults aged 80 and older without prior cardiovascular disease was linked to improved survival rates and fewer coronary events, according to a retrospective cohort study using electronic health records. This study, involving 15,745 patients from Clalit Health Services in Israel, found that 20% of statin users died compared to 37% of nonusers over an average follow-up of 4 years. Although the evidence base is limited and lacks clear guidelines for this age group, findings suggest that ongoing statin treatment may confer significant health benefits in older adults.
