When the Kidney Meets the Retina
New study suggests potential causal link between kidney disease and AMD
A recent study published in Ophthalmology Science presents evidence that chronic kidney disease (CKD) may causally contribute to age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Analyzing data from over 430,000 individuals in the UK Biobank over a decade, researchers found that patients with CKD had a significantly heightened risk for developing advanced AMD. The study employed Mendelian randomization to demonstrate that lower genetically determined kidney function is linked to a twofold increase in AMD risk. Findings suggest AMD should be viewed as a systemic disease, enhancing the need for targeted screening in CKD patients.
1. CKD linked to increased AMD risk. 2. Data from 430,000+ participants analyzed. 3. Study utilizes Mendelian randomization. 4. Genetic factors point to shared pathways. 5. AMD considered a systemic disease. 6. Targeted AMD screening for CKD patients is advised. 7. Collaborative care between nephrology and ophthalmology emphasized.
