The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare is advancing rapidly, outpacing the existing frameworks for governance and oversight. Current AI tools, such as those for ambient documentation and clinical decision support, lack the rigorous validation and monitoring structures characteristic of clinical laboratory instruments. This leaves health systems unprepared for the potential performance degradation of AI models, known as model drift. The author argues for implementing a governing framework analogous to that used in laboratory medicine to ensure patient safety and tool accountability.
