Why Incisional Hernias Persist Despite Surgical Advances

Share

Incisional hernia (IH) is a complication occurring in 5-20% of patients post-abdominal surgery, often attributed to complex disruptions in wound healing and collagen remodeling rather than solely surgical techniques. Recurrence rates can reach up to 32%, leading to severe complications like bowel obstruction. A review in the International Journal of Tissue Repair and Regeneration highlights the significance of collagen types in tissue strength and the role of mineralization in scar formation. The authors advocate for an interdisciplinary approach to better understand and address IH.
