Examining Coprescription Trends Driving the Twin Epidemic

Share

A recent longitudinal cohort study investigated national trends in coprescription of opioids and stimulants, finding an association between stimulant use and opioid dosage escalation. Patients receiving stimulant prescriptions before their first opioid prescription had significantly higher odds of escalating opioid dose trajectories, highlighting the emerging 'twin epidemic' of opioid and stimulant misuse in the U.S. health care system. The study emphasizes the need for targeted interventions and policy changes to regulate coprescriptions and mitigate the risk of adverse outcomes.
