Recent studies from the 2025 Annual Scientific Meeting of the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology indicate that patients with eczema, asthma, and other allergic conditions face greater postoperative risks, including infections, implant complications, and the need for revision surgeries. Analysis of over 20,000 women undergoing breast reconstruction and 38,000 adults undergoing bone graft procedures revealed significantly higher rates of complications for those with atopic diseases, attributed to immune dysregulation affecting healing and increasing infection susceptibility.
1. Patients with eczema and asthma face higher surgical risks. 2. Atopic diseases linked to immune dysregulation. 3. Analyzed data from >20,000 women undergoing breast reconstruction. 4. Complications include infections, revision surgeries, and capsular contracture. 5. Over 38,000 adults analyzed for bone graft complications. 6. Increased risks of infection, osteomyelitis, and mechanical loosening observed in atopic patients. 7. Study duration spanned from 2002 to 2022. 8. No conflicts of interest reported.
