Mediterranean Diet Linked to Higher Levels of Mitochondrial Microproteins

Share

A study published in Frontiers in Nutrition revealed that older patients with atrial fibrillation who strictly adhered to a Mediterranean diet exhibited elevated levels of mitochondrial microproteins and reduced oxidative stress markers. Among 49 patients evaluated, those adhering closely to the diet (scoring 7-9 points) had significantly higher levels of SHMOOSE and Humanin. The findings suggest dietary components, particularly olive oil, fish, and legumes, may correlate with improved mitochondrial signaling and lower oxidative stress, potentially enhancing cardioprotection in this population.
