SaFETy Tool Predicts Firearm Violence Risk

Share

A prospective study led by Jason E. Goldstick, PhD, at the University of Michigan tested a four-item screening tool, the SaFETy score, to assess firearm violence risk among young adults (18-24) in emergency departments across three US cities. The study involved 1,506 patients and found that firearm violence risk increased significantly with higher scores, ranging from 2% to 25%. Sensitivity and specificity varied with score thresholds, showing promise in predicting risk, though limitations include reliance on self-reported data and applicability to diverse settings.
