A recent study from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China identifies a novel systemic factor in glaucoma: increased erythrocyte osmotic fragility (EOF). This condition, which reflects the mechanical fragility of red blood cells, was found to be significantly elevated in glaucoma patients, potentially serving as an innovative blood-based biomarker. The study revealed a strong correlation between EOF and glaucoma severity, suggesting systemic inflammation and oxidative stress may contribute to retinal ganglion cell vulnerability, and proposes EOF testing as a promising tool for earlier detection and risk stratification.
