Patterns of Spread in Ocular Melanoma

Share

A retrospective study published in BMJ Open Ophthalmology examined the outcomes of 167 patients with conjunctival malignant melanoma treated between 1985 and 2013. With an average follow-up of 78 months, 25% of patients developed metastatic disease, primarily influenced by tumor location and stage. cT1 tumors were linked to lower metastatic rates, while cT2 tumors showed higher risks. Furthermore, local recurrences significantly increased the risk of distant metastasis. These findings can enhance risk stratification and inform patient surveillance strategies.
