Links Between Depression and Alzheimer’s

Share

Depression and Alzheimer's disease share multiple biological mechanisms, as evidenced in a narrative review. Key processes include oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, neuroinflammation, and vascular impairment, contributing to the prevalence of depressive symptoms in Alzheimer's patients. Up to 90% experience neuropsychiatric symptoms like mood disturbances, complicating disease management. Emerging studies suggest that some antidepressants might affect Alzheimer's pathology by altering associated biomarkers. Understanding these connections could enhance early detection and intervention strategies.
