Sex Does Not Modify Asthma Attack Predictors

Share

A recent patient-level meta-analysis published in CHEST has revealed that female patients with asthma have a higher annualized severe attack rate compared to males, with findings drawn from 6,510 individuals aged 12 and older from 22 randomized controlled trials. While prior attack history remains a strong predictor for future asthma attacks, its predictive strength varies by sex. Type 2 biomarkers like blood eosinophil count and fractional exhaled nitric oxide were consistent indicators across sexes, yet obesity significantly heightened attack rates. Researchers advocate for improving the inclusion of patients with severe obesity in clinical trials.
