COVID Tied to Hidden Smell Deficits

Share

A study from the NIH-funded RECOVER-Adult cohort reveals that nearly two-thirds of adults previously infected with SARS-CoV-2 exhibited measurable hyposmia, despite lacking self-reported changes in smell. Out of 1,393 participants who noted alterations in smell or taste, approximately 80% displayed abnormal scores on the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test (UPSIT), with 23% qualifying as experiencing severe microsmia or anosmia. Cognitive impairments were prevalent among those with smell loss. The findings highlight the need for formal olfactory testing in post-COVID-19 care.
