Metabolic Acidosis Care Limited in Chronic Kidney Disease

Share

A nationwide registry study in Japan reveals that metabolic acidosis, a common complication in chronic kidney disease (CKD), is often neglected in diagnosis and treatment. Researchers utilized data from 179,444 adults with CKD, focusing on the prevalence and assessment of serum bicarbonate levels from 2014 to 2021. The study found that 44% of patients exhibited metabolic acidosis, which increased with CKD severity. However, only a small fraction received formal diagnoses or treatment, highlighting a critical gap in management for this condition in Japanese healthcare.
